Couperose appears as patches of redness and occurs with the presence of small, dilated red blood vessels that become visible on the face. This skin condition is the most common in people who have thin or weak elasticity of the capillary walls of the skin. In normal skin, when there is a rush of blood to the face from blushing, for example, the capillary walls expand in order to receive the increased blood flow and then contracts and returns to its normal appearance. Weakened capillary walls have no problem expanding to accommodate the blood flow, but are not strong enough to contract. As a result, the dilated capillaries and blood cells remain visible on the skin, which causes the lingering redness of the complexion.
Who is Affected by Couperose?
There are a number of factors that can make someone prone to Couperose. Heredity is one of them. There are some individuals, male and female alike, who are born with naturally thin and weak skin. This includes the capillary walls of the face.
Living and exposing the skin to extreme temperatures can also increase the likelihood of developing Couperose. Whether it is extreme heat, cold or severe winds, constant exposure can be enough to gradually thin the skin, which in turn affects the status of the capillary walls. Couperose can strike any and all skin types as well.
In some cases, Couperose can target the elderly, since aging skin has a tendency to become thin and weak.

Although Couperose can target all skin types, when it comes to treating this skin condition, it is still important to choose skincare products that cater to the type of skin you have. The botanical extract Keratoplast has been medically shown to aid in the treatment of Couperose and improve the strength of the capillary walls. Chamomile is another great ingredient to look for and works to calm inflamed skin.
When selecting skincare products for treatment, choose products that are designed specifically to strengthen the capillary walls of the skin. Finding a good moisturizer is also vital in reducing the appearance of redness. Moisturizers with anti-inflammatory ingredients such as oatmeal and other hydrating properties also combat redness and lock in moisture.
Those suffering from Couperose should avoid washing their face with really hot or really cold water. Lukewarm is the best way to go when it comes to cleansing.
