Frequently Asked Questions
Cosmetic Tattoo
1. Cosmetic Tattoo / Permanent Make-Up - What is it?
Cosmetic Tattooing, Permanent Makeup or Micro Pigmentation as it is also known, is used as an option to traditional, everyday make up. Cosmetic tattooing can be used to substitute normal make up applications including:
- Eyeliner
- Eyebrows
- Lip liner
- Lip shading
- Beauty spot
The main purpose of permanent make up is to maintain a perfect appearance 24/7 without the need to apply and re-apply make up.
Permanent make up should be applied by a trained professional using tiny needles to place natural coloured pigments into the skin, comparable to tattooing. The aim is to replicate perfectly applied eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, lip liner, lipstick, or beauty spots to enhance the appearance. The effects are permanent, although the colour will fade over time, and top ups will be needed.
The Benefits of Cosmetic Tattooing
Permanent make up is perfect for women with busy lifestyles who need to constantly look their best but do not have the time to waste applying and re-applying their make up. There are various shades, colours and styles to choose from and permanent make up can be applied to suit the individual. Permanent make up is also very useful and convenient for:
- People who play sport or swim regularly
- People who wear contact lenses or glasses
- People who have sensitive skin or eyes and are allergic to traditional make up
- People who have shaky hands or have difficulty applying traditional make up
- Chemotherapy patients

It is very important that we are made aware of the following at the time you make your appointment;
- are you pregnant?
- are you on medication (of any kind)?
- are you being treated for any medical conditions?
- are you planning to have any cosmetic surgery?
In some cases we will require that you provide a doctor's letter e.g.
- if you are a diabetic, using prescribed blood thinners (aspirin, Worfarin, Cartia, etc) or have heart valve implants.
- you suffer with keloid scarring on the face
- you have any moles, freckles, or any known skin disorder in the area that you wish to have tattooed.
In some cases, it may not be possible to perform the treatment you wish. If this is the case then we would only make this decision in your best interests.
Things to watch out for after your Cosmetic Tattoo Treatment
- When first done, Eyebrows, Eyeliner, Lips, Beauty Spots and scars will be much darker in colour for up to 2 weeks after the treatment while the initial healing process takes place.
- The total healing process takes about 6 weeks, at which time the true colour of the tattoo is evident.
- Colours will appear brighter and more sharply defined immediately following the procedure. Between 3 to 14 days they will soften and lighten. Be patient, even if you think too much colour has been lost. Wait 6 weeks to see the true colour, as it seems to take on new strength, and it is only after 6 weeks that your adjustment can be done.
- We are unable to predict the longevity of colour retention in the skin. Every person’s skin responds differently to these treatments, and this information acts as a guideline only. However, it should be remembered that in most cases these guidelines give successful results if followed.
Your Tattoo is now in your hands
- After your treatment you will receive an antibiotic cream from us to apply 2 x per day (morning & evening) for 2 weeks.
All Tattoos
- The area where the tattoo has been applied must be kept moist for successful healing and to avoid scabbing. Scabbing will result in excessive loss of pigment.
- NO Make-Up is to be applied to eyebrows or eyeliner area for at least 10 days.
- NO picking at any scaling that may occur — let the scales fall off naturally — picking could cause scarring and infection.
First Day
- Bath or shower as normal — NO SOAP or CLEANSERS on the treated area for one day, as they can be detrimental to the bonding process that must take place for the pigment to stabilise in the dermis.
- Clean the area with warm running water using a clean cloth or cotton wool, pat dry, and apply a thin smear of the antiseptic cream with a clean cotton tip.
- Cold compresses or ice packs will help bring the swelling down (if evident). Don’t use ice if lips are still numb.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Exposure to Sun, Salt, Chlorine & Chemicals
- Exposure to the sun over time can cause fading and colour change.
- Wear a sun block, or products containing UVA/UVB blocks, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyeliner.
- Salt or chlorinated water can cause a bleaching effect – it is recommended the tattoo be covered with Vaseline.
- Chemicals of any kind could interfere with the healing and the colour.
- Glycolic Acid and face peel products must be kept completely away from the Tattoo as continued use could lighten colours.
Laser Resurfacing
- If you are having laser resurfacing or laser hair removal after your Cosmetic Tattoo, please inform the laser operator of your Cosmetic Tattoo procedure.
- Hitting the tattoo with the laser beam could darken it, or it may turn grey or black.
Call Stockholms Beauty Center immediately if any of the following appear on your tattooed areas;
- any prolonged discomfort
- localised pain
- long-term swelling and/or unusual redness or lumps surrounding the treated area may be an indication of any infection
Well......Yes & No
.
- Pigment is inserted into the dermis of the skin like a body tattoo, however, the machine used is different and the depth of colour implant is less. A Cosmetic Tattoo machine is smaller, lighter and less powerful than the traditional tattoo machine.
- A Cosmetic Tattoo Therapist should have a deep understanding of the skin, facial structure, and have experience with make-up and design. At Stockholms Beauty Center all of our Therapists are experienced and formally trained.
There can be some very mild discomfort, but it should not be painful.
Extremely effective pain control products are used during a treatment. A topical anesthetic is used in most treatments prior to the procedure, and before the skin is punctured. After the skin is punctured, then 2 anaesthetic gels, which when combined, are very effective.
